About a year ago, I had the honor of meeting Dee at a convention in Denver, Colorado. She is an amazing cosplayer and is very loved among the community there, and I just had to interview her for our blog! Find her on Instagram here.
Q: Why did you start cosplaying?
Dee: I started cosplaying because Sarah Cosmama and her husband started Club Cosplay Denver and I signed on to help them out.
Q: Did you start cosplaying because you had crafting skills or did you develop crafting skills in order to cosplay?
Dee: I definitely had zero crafting skills before starting and now I have like 1% skill. I've only made a few things from scratch but I mostly like to thrift and alter what I find to fit the character.
Q: What is your favorite costume?
Dee: My favorite costume is one I'm currently working on, it's the Shaman from the game For Honor. I've put the most effort into it, maybe second to Deedlit, but it's something my husband was really excited about and that made me more excited to do it.
Q: Why is cosplay important?
Dee: Cosplay is important to me because I can fly my nerd flag in a creative way, and I really just love dressing up.
Q: What advice do you have to new cosplayers?
Dee: I don't know if I'm qualified to give out advice, but if you're new or considering, just do it! Finding a group shoot is a nice place to start and make some friends. Watching tutorials is also super helpful, that's where I learned everything.
Q: What is the most important skill to have to be a successful cosplayer?
Dee: From I've seen, the most important skill is knowing when to strike with a "fad" cosplay. As far as technical skills, trying out sewing and armor making to see which one you like more and following that path. It's cosplay, not cosjob so find what you like to do and do that.
Q: Who is your favorite cosplayer?
Dee: My favorite cosplayer is probably, Drisana Latke of Drizzy Designs. She does amazing armor and an incredible young Maleficent from the movie which functional moving wings. She's also super nice. There are a lot of awesome and sweet cosplayers out there so I could go on!
Q: Any kind of statement you want to make in regards to cosplay?
Dee: If you think cosplay isn't for everyone, you're wrong. Deal with it.
Q: What is your favorite anime or manga?
Dee: My favorite anime is probably Bible Black... just kidding, I'm not a psycho! It's Evangelion or Gundam Wing. I know that's kind of cliche to love Eva but it's well loved for a reason. Gundam Wing probably ages me, but it was pretty formative in my early years.
